Diaspora!


I have ranted on about the lack of respect that companies and web site’s have for their customers.

Yes! I know I am one of these companies, but I am not! Having spoken to my customers they do not want me to share their info with others. It is a shame that big business does not follow the same policy. It would make customers more loyal knowing you can be trusted.

It is funny how things, happen I have cruised the WordPress blogs and came across “why I cancelled my Facebook account” It is about an individual  fed up with his data being used for other peoples gain and I agree with him.  Just for the record I’m a customer too.

I have posted on this subject a couple of times  before ( Privacy and Terms and Conditions )  because I’m feed up with the way I’m treated and would like to see change.  I was starting to think that I was the only one but having read a large number of  posts on the Facebook thread, it’s great to know I’m not alone.

While reading through the posts I came across William Wards post about a group of young men and the Diaspora project.

A couple months ago, Eben Moglen spoke about how our loss of personal privacy was in large part related to the migration of our data to the Facebooks of the world. He was disappointed that, in 2010, we weren’t able to use our considerable personal computing resources to do this at home, with the same sort of great user experiences and ability to link up with everyone you know (or ever knew.) There really isn’t a good reason for just one firm to hold onto all your stories and persona and secrets. Better to spread them around and use networking to connect them together and clever software to link them up for easy sharing.

That said, some computer science students took up his point and decided to build an open social network, one that will let you control your data absolutely, while being able to share with people you know or people you don’t know – your choice.

They’re just getting started – you can check out their plans here at http://joindiaspora.com . The goal is to give you back your control and create a social network scheme where the users run the show, not the marketers.

With all our broadband, all our easy web hosting services, and all our computing power – we should be able to do this without being at the mercy of one company’s idea of privacy. 🙂

It is great to see the younger generation are not going to sit back and be dictated too by big out of date businesses and hopefully they will make some money in the process. I for one will be following their progress with great interest.

Terms and conditions


This is a follow on from my bit about privacy policies.

In an article I read recently it makes it clear that a lot of you forget to look at the small print and I can understand why; it goes on for ever. Life is too short to spend hours running through terms,  conditions, privacy but by not doing so you are letting companies play god with your complacency. 

Game, a large retailer of gaming products, made  changes to its term and conditions to see how many of you read what you were signing up to when using their site. They added a paragraph that stated:

” you would grant them the right to your immortal soul in this life and the next”

 or words to that effect. While this paragraph was part of the conditions  over 7,500 of  you signed up to it. As part of the research they added an opt out that gave a £5 discount on your purchases, there were no takers, no surprise there then!

Most companies are fair-minded traders, but they are not helping themselves or their customers. They need to  change to make things more transparent for both sides. I would suggest that both terms, conditions and privacy should do what insurance companies have applied to their polices. The key facts stated in the first few ( I mean few!) paragraphs of these statements with links to further explanation if needed for the customer.  They need to be transparent stating the good and the bad.

 I get fed up with wasting my time  reading  terms and conditions to find hidden near the end the bad bits, when that appears I log off and go somewhere else. Companies need to understand that is lost revenue, I for one will not be back!

It is time we the customer took control of our web experience! Will this ever happen though, because not enough of us think we have the power to do so! The fact is we do, but while we stay complacent companies will take advantage.

Since setting up this blog I have not had the time to return until now. I am only able to do this now because it is a bank holiday known as Whitson which also ushers in half term for the kids meaning they get a week off. This used to mean that the drive into work was easer and the traffic much lighter. but now it almost makes no difference.

For a down turn year we have seen our work load go up. Why?  People are hanging on to their money?  Yes!  That’s not always  the case, the way they are spending it is a bit more considered, checking out there options before committing to a course of action.

We are getting more enquiries and from that more work, repair is making more sense over new and now in many cases second hand. It is strange that people do not think that when they opt  for a repair that it is good for the environment.  Lets be honest when you have smashed up your pride and joy all you want to do is get it back on the road as quickly and cost affectively as possible, This is where in an increasing number of cases we are coming to the fore.

Are we a green company? Possible.
